BioLite Camp Stove - Quick Look! (video)
I've been waiting for the new BioLite Camp Stove to arrive for what seems like a very long time now, more than two years. Well, that day finally arrived on Monday and I'm very excited about testing it out. I haven't had much time to use it, I posted photos and more videos on my Facebook page for those of you that haven't seen them, and used the opportunity to answer some of the questions that were asked.
Does it Charge iOS Devices Properly? It sure does. Apple iOS devices like the iPhone4 and iPad2 are notoriously fuzzy about their charging compatibility. If you've ever struggled to find a solar charger that can power your iPhone on the trail you will know exactly what I am talking about. Below is a very short video to show the Camp Stove successfully charging my iPhone4. I was also able to charge my iPad2 - so can confirm that both work!
Does it Really Burn Clean and Reduce The Smoke? Yup! In fact the Camp Stove burns so cleanly and efficiently that it consumes fule at an amazing rate. Even after my limited testing I've learned to have a handy supply of more fule to feed the Camp Stove as it's burning.
You will see just how much the Camp Stove reduces smoke in the video below. I started the fire with a match to get the stove started (recommended) and as soon as there was enough heat (less than 2 mins) the fan unit automatically kicked in and started forcing air around the inner chamber.
Can You Give Us a Size Comparison? Sure. Here is the Camp Stove stood next to two standard cans of food. The exact dimensions are: 8.25 inches x 5 inches - or about the same size as a standard Nalgene bottle.
How Much Does it Weigh? Ok, so this is not an ultralight stove by any means. It weighs 2 lbs 1.25 oz which is more than any other stove I own. Common sense would tell you that it's not meant or targeted to ultralighters, so I'll save you the effort of listing out all the stoves that are lighter than this :)
BUT - how many stoves do you know of that can burn wood as clean as this, charge or power an electronic device, and boil 1 liter of water in 5 mins? It's a short list right. I've only used the Camp Stove a few times now and only twice for cooking/boiling, but can tell you that in that short period of time I was struck by how much of a game changer this si going to be. I'm totally digging it, more detailed review with performance metrics to follow.
